About | Kathy Donchak

I live in Northwest Wyoming with my husband and twin boys, where we love the great outdoors and the beauty that surrounds us every day. Our move from Austin, TX to Wyoming was one of the best decisions we ever made. You can read about that journey here.

I am a freelance educational consultant and writer, creating and piloting professional development courses for over eleven years most recently in educational publishing and previously in mortgage banking.

Some of the companies I have worked with include McGraw-Hill Education, Davidson Titles Inc., and Acton Academy Austin.

What I am Learning

I returned to graduate school when I could not find the help my son needed for his sensory challenges. I am now a Ph.D. candidate in Applied Ecopsychology.

Passion Projects

I believe that connection to natural play is essential to healthy child development. You can read more in my Natural Child Manifesto.

Personalized Learning aka Unschooling

What began as a Kindergarten gap year for our twins, and explorations into alternatives schools to find an educational ecosystem that would fit our son’s sensory needs, became a lifestyle of learning. Now at the end of our third year, we have found that individualized learning paths via unschooling is the best option for both of our sons.

Why We Unschool

The ability to challenge and support them while providing an environment based on healthy development is the reason we love homeschooling.

What I am Doing Now

Organizing research in my free time for a dissertation is an interesting exercise in getting to the heart of an issue. The exercise has improved my writing and also shows our kids that lifelong learning is important to stretch your view of the world.
